The plump buds open to reveal enormous blooms, crafted from multiple layers of silky, pure white petals, and highlighted by golden stamens at the center. The double, dinner-plate-sized flowers can reach up to 25cm and carry a delicately subtle fragrance. Few shrubs can match the elegance and grandeur of tree peonies. Although they may be an investment, their stunning beauty makes them true garden showpieces, sure to inspire awe. Despite their dramatic appearance, tree peonies are surprisingly easy to grow with the right care—just a sheltered spot with full sun (or light shade) and fertile, well-drained soil. They can also be grown in large containers. Fully hardy and generally resistant to pests and diseases, tree peonies require minimal maintenance and no routine pruning. These long-lasting plants will bloom for decades, offering abundant, lightly fragrant, dinner-plate-sized flowers each late spring or early summer. Grow tree peonies in full sun or a lightly shaded position that is sheltered from cold winds. They prefer a well drained, humus-rich, fertile, neutral to alkaline soil. They will grow in most soils, except waterlogged and acidic soils, provided they are improved on planting. This is best achieved by adding plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant tree peonies so that the grafted union sits about 15cm (6") below the soil surface. Shallow planting may hinder establishment and delay flowering.
