Whether you’re looking to create a striking border or add to your cutting garden, gladioli are a versatile and stunning choice. Take advantage of our growing tips and guides to ensure a successful and vibrant display.

Which gladioli are hardy?

Hardy gladioli varieties, such as Gladiolus nanus, are tolerant of colder conditions and can often withstand milder winters. Similarly, Gladiolus 'Midnight Mix' is a half-hardy perennial. These types are perfect for gardeners looking to enjoy gladioli without the need for extensive winter protection. Plant them in well-drained soil to ensure their survival through colder months.

When to plant gladioli bulbs?

The timing varies depending on the variety you choose, but generally the ideal time to plant gladioli bulbs is in the spring, after the danger of frost has passed. Plant the corms in a sunny location, spacing them about 10 to 15cm apart and 10 to 15cm deep. Depending on which type you choose, the gladioli bulbs will produce a vibrant display of flowers through summer and into early autumn.

When to lift gladioli bulbs?

Gladioli bulbs should be lifted in the autumn, after the foliage has died back. Carefully dig up the corms, trim off the dead leaves and allow them to dry in a warm, airy place for a few weeks. Once dried, store the corms in a cool, frost-free location until replanting in the spring.
