Ferns

Effortlessly stylish; ferns make elegant house plants with graceful, textured fronds. Their arching leaves will soften the hardest architectural lines of your home. These low-maintenance house plants are easy to grow in a brightly-lit spot, away from the direct glare of the sun. Indoor ferns especially love the humidity of a warm bathroom or kitchen.

How to choose the best ferns

Ferns are one of the loveliest house plants and boast beautiful foliage. Scindapsus pictus ‘Trebie’ has lovely silver variegation, while the fronds of Arachniodes aristata ‘Variegata’ have a striking lime-green stripe, and the leaves of Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’ are fabulously frilly. Make a striking display by putting your fern in one of our beautiful decorative pots filled with peat-free houseplant compost.

Which ferns are most drought tolerant?

Drought tolerant ferns include Dryopteris affinis, Platycerium veitchii ‘Braam’ and Arachniodes aristata ‘Variegata’.

Which ferns can be grown in a sunny spot?

The Golden Shield Fern (Dryopteris affinis) will cope with a sunny spot and Platycerium veitchii ‘Braam’ needs a bright position out of direct sunlight.

Which ferns can also be grown outside?

Both Cyrtomium fortunei and the Golden Shield Fern (Dryopteris affinis) can be grown outside. Arachniodes aristata ‘Variegata’ will grow in a sheltered outdoor position in neutral to acid soil.
