Why not add the unexpected to your borders with some of our more unusual alliums. Try the tendril-like blooms of Allium scorodoprasum ‘Art’ or the architectural green ‘hair’ of Allium ‘Hair’. Alliums like a sunny spot with well-drained soil. They can also be grown in containers.
Alliums come in various colours as well as the popular purple varieties. Try ‘Red Mohican’ for striking red flowers, ‘Yellow Fantasy’ for yellow-green, and Allium caeruleum for bright blue blooms.
Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ is the tallest variety and can reach 90cm. Its symmetrical, tightly-formed heads of vivid purple look majestic when planted in clumps in the border or as a feature in gravel gardens.
The largest flower heads are produced by Allium christophii, growing up to 20cm in diameter. The silvery purple spheres are formed by up to 80 individual star-shaped blooms, adding show-stopping texture to beds and borders.
