Growing your own veg from seed is so rewarding. Sow your vegetable seeds onto the surface of damp seed compost in spring and place them on a warm windowsill or into a heated propagator to germinate. Expect to see germination within two weeks. Your veggie seedlings are ready to be potted on when they develop two true leaves. Keep them sheltered until the last frost date, when it’s time to harden your veggie plantlets off before planting them into their final positions out in the garden.

Sow your vegetable seed in spring. Some seeds, like chilli peppers, beefsteak tomatoes and aubergines need a long growing season so are best started in January in a heated propagator. Hardy seeds like peas and broad beans can be sown outdoors in January, but most veggie seeds are best sown in March or April when the weather starts to warm up and light levels increase.
Sow your staple vegetable seeds successionally, sowing salad leaves, spring onions and herbs every few weeks to enjoy regular harvests of these tasty crops over a longer period.
It’s easy to grow vegetables from seed in a small space. Use space saving solutions like hanging baskets and window boxes to grow a range of smaller veggies like salad leaves, dwarf tomatoes and dwarf French beans outdoors. Patio planters are a great place to grow root vegetables and potato bags produce fantastic yields from your favourite spuds. Try herb seeds and salad seeds if you only have a windowsill to spare. Treat your windowsill salad like a cut and come again crop and either grow your herbs to maturity in small pots or treat them like tasty microgreens and harvest when they’re an inch tall.
