Grow tree peonies in full sun or a lightly shaded position that is sheltered from cold winds. They prefer a well drained, humus-rich, fertile, neutral to alkaline soil. They will grow in most soils, except waterlogged and acidic soils, provided they are improved on planting. This is best achieved by adding plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply.
