Here are some quick answers to the questions we’re most often asked about daffodil bulbs.
Plant daffodil bulbs during the autumn for a bright, colourful display the following spring. If you can get your bulbs into the ground in September, they'll have time to establish before the worst of the winter weather kicks in. When winter strikes, the cold triggers chemical changes within the bulbs, preparing them for a burst of growth in spring.
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Dig the area over, working in plenty of organic matter, and removing any weeds. Plant your bulbs with the flat basal plate down, to a depth of three times the height of the bulb.
You can leave daffodil bulbs in the ground year round, but if you do choose to lift them each year, make sure you remove any excess soil and dry them in the sun before storing. Wait until the skin of the bulb becomes papery, then store them in paper bags, mesh bags, or cardboard egg cartons. The key is to keep the bulbs cool, dry, and well ventilated. Check them once in a while and be sure to throw out any that show signs of rot.
