Magnolia x loebneri 'Pirouette' may be small in stature, but it packs a punch with its stunning display of double flowers on a compact frame. In March and April, the bare branches are adorned with citrus-scented blooms, featuring shorter outer tepals and longer inner ones, creating the effect of sparkling white waterlilies—a truly captivating sight in full bloom. This variety forms a medium to large shrub or small tree, producing an abundance of flowers even at an early age, so you won't have to wait long to enjoy its springtime beauty. In autumn, the large, dark green leaves take on shades of bronze and yellow before they fall. A hybrid between Magnolia stellata and Magnolia kobus, Pirouette thrives in moist, acidic soils but can tolerate slightly alkaline conditions if ample organic matter is added to the planting site. Plant in a sunny or semi shaded position that recieves a minimum of 4-6 hours of sunshine per day and is sheltered from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Suitable for acid soils only that are rich, moist and well-drained. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant. When growing in a patio container use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3.
