Our Garlic & Shallot Saver Collection, contains a strong selection of varieties well bred for the British weather and valued for their good flavours and robust growth.

Your collection will include:

  • Onion (Spring) 'Sturon' 250g - An RHS Award of Garden Merit variety producing well sized semi-round bulbs with good keeping qualities. Onion 'Sturon' is a traditional variety that has become a favourite for its reliability. Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 15cm (6").
  • Onion (Spring) 'Stuttgarter Giant' 250g - An ever popular variety producing firm, semi-flat bulbs with an excellent flavour. Onion 'Stuttgarter Giant' performed well in commercial assessments against 'Red Baron'. Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 15cm (6").
  • Onion (Spring) 'Cupido' 250g - A superb storage onion producing reliably high yields of uniformly round, dark skinned bulbs. Planting spring onion sets is quick and the aftercare is minimal. Height: 45cm (18in). Spread: 15cm (6in).
  • Onion (Spring) 'Jet Set' F1 250g - If you want to get your onion harvest off to a quick start then try Onion ‘Jet Set’ F1. Maturing faster than most other varieties, ‘Jet Set’ is resistant to bolting and produces uniform, yellow-skinned, round onions. Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 15cm (6").
  • Onion (Spring) 'White Snowball' 250g - These sparkling white onions are known for their delicate flavour and are great for roasting. Produces large, bright white bulbs with firm, white flesh. The mild-flavoured bulbs are perfect for eating fresh but also possess good storage potential so they will keep through autumn. Height: 45cm (18in). Spread: 15cm (6in).
  • Onion (Spring) 'Corrado' F1 250g - An early variety that produces a high yield of golden-yellow, globe onions with excellent flavour. The bulbs are easy-to-grow and boast impressive disease resistance. The firm, strong-skinned bulbs make ‘Corrado’ excellent for storing. Height: 45cm (18in). Spread: 15cm (6in).
  • Garlic (Spring) 'Picardy Wight' 2 Bulbs - Well adapted to British conditions. This softneck variety produces large, white bulbs with a mild but still rich flavour. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 15cm (6").

Plant onions, shallots and garlic in rows in any firm, well drained soil in full sun. Prepare the planting area several weeks in advance by incorporating some well rotted garden compost to improve drainage and soil fertility. Avoid planting onions and garlic on freshly manured soil. On particularly wet ground, try growing onion sets in raised beds.

When growing onions from sets, plant the bulbs so that the tip of bulb is just protruding through the soil surface. Leave a space of 10cm (4") between each bulb, and 30cm (12") between each row. Plant shallots in the same way leaving 18cm (7") between bulbs. For garlic, carefully split the bulb into individual cloves. Plant each clove at a depth of 2cm (1") below the surface of the soil and 10cm (4") apart, leaving 45cm (18") between each row.

Live Plants

Dobies strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

Non Standard Deliveries

Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland. We are committed to finding a way that we can resume or normal services again as soon as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvience caused.

Prices include VAT where applicable.

We reserve the right to contact you and advise an additional charge where necessary and are happy to quote for carriage of specific products to more remote areas. Some items may not be available to all areas.

We reserve the right to revise any carriage charges in the event of carrier price increase or other unforeseen circumstances. We will always advise of the carriage charge before payment is taken.

All Dobies products should reach you in perfect condition, just as they left us. If you are dissatisfied in any way with their condition on arrival, please let us know within 14 days. We are only liable for the cost of the goods as quoted on the website plus the cost of delivery if the goods are faulty.

Unlike many companies, we publish all of our reviews - good or bad - to give you, the customer, total transparency and peace of mind.
