The Umbrella Bamboo can grow to over 2 meters in height and quickly develops into dense clumps of arching, yellow-green canes, topped with umbrella-like foliage. This resilient bamboo is ideal for creating privacy screens, particularly in urban environments, where it helps reduce traffic noise and filter air pollution. While bamboo has a distinctly tropical appearance, it's surprisingly easy and fast-growing. Fargesia is also wind-resistant and thrives in both shaded and sunny spots, making it a versatile choice for filling hard-to-reach areas in the garden or concealing less attractive features. Height: Up to 4 meters (12'). Spread: 1.5 meters (4.9'). Fargesia murielae, also known as the Umbrella Bamboo due to its graceful arching habit, is a large evergreen bamboo growing to over 2m (6.5') tall. Unlike many bamboos, Umbrella Bamboo 'Selection' has a clump-forming habit so won't invade your garden. The elegant, arching canes are yellow-green in colour topped with bright green leaves. Perfect for adding a tropical touch to your garden this hardy bamboo has a superb dense habit making it the perfect screening plant for boundary edges and unsightly areas of the garden. Bamboo plants also thrive in poorly drained, clay soil and tolerate both sun and shade for those awkward spots. Height: Up to 4m (12’). Spread: 1.5m (5’). When growing Umbrella Bamboo in pots, choose a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant Umbrella Bamboos directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds. Fargesia murieliae spreads via underground rhizomes so is best given space to grow. Alternatively surround the roots with a barrier to restrict the plant’s spread.
