Fargesia robusta Pingwu is a clump-forming, non-invasive bamboo that quickly creates a tall, dense privacy screen and effective noise barrier. In spring, its culms emerge in a striking rusty red, gradually turning bright green and developing a distinctive checkerboard pattern as the sheaths fade to white. This beautiful variegation lasts throughout the summer. Known for its impressive cold tolerance, Pingwu retains its glossy, evergreen foliage even in temperatures as low as -20°C. This hardy bamboo thrives in most well-drained soils and is perfect for creating fast-growing screens. Unlike more aggressive bamboo species, Pingwu is well-behaved, making it ideal for smaller gardens, urban environments, and even container gardening on patios. When growing Fargesia rufa in pots, choose a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting.
